Wolves

Early this morning—no later than 5:30—we heard distant howling. The wind was high, but this didn’t sound like, say, the soughing of pine trees. The pitch and fluctuations were independent and came and went. The cat reacted strongly.

There are wolves and coyotes in New Jersey—and close to the city though Bergen County is, it also includes the Ramapos and extends all the way to Port Jervis. Plenty of open country.

It was eerie hearing what seemed to us the unmistakable sound of a wild animal howling. Then again, it’s nice when wolves identify themselves as such! (You have to go into the city, really, to find fashionable sheep’s clothing, though I suppose the malls on Route 17 might do! Truly, in much of this sovereign state, I find it’s sheep in wolves’ clothing who do the most mischief.)

Off to play a wedding this morning. Tomorrow begins the season of Advent.

A joyful day to you, and remember you share an aging planet with other noble creatures, including humans.
